Jack Hirshleifer: A Nobel Prize left unbestowed
نویسنده
چکیده
Jack Hirshleifer (1925-2005) contributed to investment theory, information economics, conflict, and bioeconomics, clarified the foundations of investment and capital theory in the spirit of Fisher, and made basic contributions to the analysis of covariance risk, gambling and insurance, the Modigliani-Miller Theorem, and public investment through a focus on time, uncertainty and information. He formulated new models of public goods, added to understanding of contest success functions, and explained the paradox of power. He developed a general equilibrium approach to conflict jointly encompassing production, exchange, appropriation and defense. He analyzed the emotions as guarantors of threats and promises, proposed alternatives to the tit-for-tat strategy, considered the bioeconomic causes of war, and investigated the truthful signaling hypothesis. Jack Hirshleifer was a leading scholar and original thinker of the 20 century. His scientific contributions have left a Nobel Prize unbestowed.

New frontiers in molecular pharmacology and medicine: a celebration.
On October 24, 2003, the Yale School of Medicine inaugurated its new wing for the Department of Pharmacology with a star-studded symposium titled "New Frontiers in Molecular Pharmacology and Medicine." In the world of academia, this is as close as one gets to red carpet Oscar quality spectatorship. The roster began with Tony Hunter of the Salk Institute, Joan Steitz of Yale, Jack Dixon of UCSD,...

The 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider, and Jack Szostak for their contributions to our understanding of how the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes, telomeres, are replicated by a specialized reverse transcriptase, telomerase. I present a personal view of the telomere field, putting the contributions of these three Nobel laureates into ...

Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak have been jointly awarded the 100th Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for the discovery of “how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase”. This discovery of basic research done in a primitive organism has been a breakthrough for the understanding of how cells successfully maintain cell division and turn in...
متن کاملEarly Work on Telomeres
The DNA sequence of Tetrahymena telomeres was the first to be determined among all telomeres by Elizabeth Blackburn and Joseph Gall in 1978. In 1982, Jack Szostak and Blackburn showed that the unique DNA sequence contained in the telomeres served to protect the chromosomes from degradation. In 1985, Carol Greider and Blackburn showed how the telomeres could be elongated by the enzyme telomerase...

A recent gathering of clinicians was asked: “Who won the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine?”. The silence was telling. The revelation that it went to two US researchers for “their discoveries of odorant receptors and the organisation of the olfactory system” was greeted with an incredulous “Is that so?”. “A Nobel Prize on the nose!” was one mischievous rejoinder. Obviously, the Nobel P...
